Yunus Energy 50 MW Wind Farm Project
Wind Power in Pakistan
Wind Power in Pakistan
Yunus Energy Limited, the owner of the Yunus Energy 50 MW Wind Farm Project, is part of most respected Pakistani Yunus Brothers Group (YBG).
The history of YBG can be traced back to 1962 when the foundation of a trading house was laid. The establishment of the fabric trading business house, which turned into one of the largest conglomerates in Pakistan in a period spanning four decades, served as the first milestone in this journey.
Since then, YBG has established various other business units in Textile, Cement, Construction and Power Generation sectors and has proved its business standing in local and international markets. It owns one of the largest cement manufacturing facilities and the largest yarn manufacturing unit in the country.
YBG has decided to build and operate its own zero emissions wind farm to overcome energy supply shortages and, at the same time, seeking to avoid harmful climatic effects.
The purpose of the Yunus Energy 50 MW Wind Farm Project is to utilize wind resources for electricity generation through the construction of a wind farm with a total capacity of 50 MW and to deliver the electricity generated from the project to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) grid.
By replacing the electricity supplied by the WAPDA grid, which is heavily dominated by fossil fuel fired power plants, with electricity generated from wind power the proposed project activity will achieve considerable greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions.
The project, which belongs to the „first of its kind“ CDM projects in Pakistan, foresees the installation and operation of newest foreign manufactured wind turbines, which will supply an average annual generation of 138,900 MWh to the WAPDA grid thereby reducing the baseline grid emissions by an annual 86,000 t CO2e.
