Today, UPM announced the successful registration of the “49.5 MW Sachal Wind Power Project, Jhampir”, located in Sindh province, Pakistan (UNFCCC Ref. 10162). The actual registration date is 22 Apr 2016 and the project will benefit from a 10-year-crediting period. The project is the tenth clean energy project to be successfully registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) by UPM in Pakistan over the last four years.
The project, established by the Sachal Energy Development (Pvt.) Ltd., comprises the installation of 33 wind turbines of 1.5 MW each. These will provide a total installed capacity of 49.5 MW, with a predicted power supply to the grid of 136,500 MWh per annum. The GHG emission reductions of the project are around 84,804 tCO2e/yr. The project was validated by TÜV NORD CERT GmbH.
UPM is also supporting the registration of the project under the Gold Standard, which will be soon be able to join the Zorlu Wind Project as one of the very few Gold Standard projects in Pakistan. A Gold Standard registration will verify and acknowledge all social, economical and environmental co-benefits of the project and allow the Sachal Wind project to access the international voluntary carbon market.
It is a hopeful sign to witness the ongoing commitment of Pakistan, one of the smallest contributors to climate change, to promote the development of green energy and increase its participation in the world’s carbon market. UPM is very proud to continue being the partner of choice in terms of development and management of CDM and Gold Standard projects for many prominent renewable energy producers in the country. - Matin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM
