On the 7th and 9th of August 2013, UPM successfully registered its two 50 MW Pakistani wind farm projects, “Foundation Wind Energy-I” (CDM Ref. 9268) and “Foundation Wind Energy-II” (CDM Ref. 9314) with the CDM, both with effective date as per 31st of December 2012. The projects are located roundabout 50 km southeast of the city of Karachi, Pakistan, on Kutti Kun New Island in Taluka Mirpur Sakro District Thatta. The project owners are Foundation Wind Energy I and II (Private) Limited which are subsidiaries of the Fauji Foundation, one of Pakistan’s largest business conglomerates.

The purpose of both wind farm projects with a total combined capacity of 100 MW and an estimated combined electricity production of 288,200 MWh per year is to utilize climate friendly wind resources for electricity generation and to deliver the generated electricity to the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC), which is operating the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) grid.

By replacing the electricity of the WAPDA grid, which is heavily dominated by fossil fuel fired power plants, with electricity generated from clean wind power, the project activities will not only contribute significantly to closing Pakistan’s massive energy supply gap but will also achieve total combined greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions of approximately 1.780 million tCO2e throughout their entire crediting period of 10 years. In addition, the two wind farm projects will offer a considerable amount of job opportunities for local people during the construction phase and the operational period, and will thus support economic growth in the target region.

The two 50 MW Foundation wind energy projects are among the first of its kind in Pakistan. They built upon UPM’s valuable experience gained with the Pakistani Sapphire and Yunus wind power projects (CDM Refs. 8163 and 9039) that UPM already registered with the CDM earlier. With this impressive line of projects, that will even be extended soon, UPM is the leading renewable energy CDM project developer in Pakistan. - Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM
