UPM is pleased to announce new CER issuances. On November 3, two of UPM’s CDM Landfill Gas projects in China, the Luohe MSW Landfill Site LFG Recovery to Power Project (CDM 5238) and the Luoyang Zhangluoping MSW Landfill Site LFG Recovery to Power Project (CDM 6229) have received their latest issuances with approx. 250,000 CP2 CERs, vintages 2016 to 2020, and 113,000 CP2 CERs, vintages 2016 to 2018. In total, 363,000 not Corsia eligible CP2 CERs are available to be used for voluntary carbon offsetting.

The Luohe and Luoyang Zhangluoping MSW Landfill Site LFG Recovery to Power Projects recover and destroy landfill gas (LFG) generated at the municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill site in Luohe city and Luoyang city, Henan province, P.R. China. Both are developed by Shanghai BCCY New Power Industry Co., Ltd. The collected LFG will be used for electricity production.

It is estimated that the Luohe project with 2MW engine capacity will destroy nearly 16,000 tons of methane and generate around 102,000 MWh of electricity in the 10 years crediting period, thus approx. 416,000 tCO₂e of GHG emissions could be reduced. The respective figures for the Luoyang LFG project with 1.5MW engine capacity are 16,000 tons of destroyed methane, approx. 84,000 MWh of produced electricity and up to 402,000 tCO₂e less GHG emissions (SDG 13 – Climate Action). In addition, both projects verifiably contribute to achieving the following SDGs in China:

SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being): The two LFG projects destroy LFG which contains H₂S, resulting in unbearable odours, so that the living conditions of the neighbourhood are improved.

SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy): The produced electricity obtained from recovered LFG improves the supply with clean energy in Henan province at low cost.

SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): Each of the projects has created around 15 new jobs for locals during construction and operation of the power plants. Further to that, both projects enhance safety conditions as they reduce potential dangers of fire and explosion on the landfill sites by recovering LFG.

SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure): The two projects have promoted LFG recovery and utilization in China by providing successful demonstration projects.
