UPM Umwelt-Projekt-Management GmbH is happy to announce that it has successfully reached its 30-year-old milestone. The company was created and registered by Dipl. Ing. Norbert Garbers in the city of Munich, Germany in spring 1991. Mr Garber was a civil construction engineer and specialist in geophysics with experience in landfill management. There was one question and one goal behind the creation of the company: how can we mitigate the impact of human activities on the environment?
Since its inception and up to the early years of the new millennium, the company was already able to contribute to that goal by using landfill gas to create energy thanks to the technical assistance and engineering design support it provided to landfill degasification projects in Germany.
In 2006, UPM accelerated its transition toward Sustainable Development and Climate Mitigation Actions. The company started developing several Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project activities in Asia on behalf of major European compliance buyers. It also started operating in China where it opened a wholly-owned company, UPM Environment Engineering Project Management Consulting (Beijing) Co. Ltd. (UPM Beijing), in 2008. To date, UPM has supported successfully the registration of around 30 Renewable Energy projects under the CDM, the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS), the Gold Standard (GS) and the Gold Standard for Global Goals (GS4GG), corresponding to a total of 25 millions tCO2e of emissions reduction to be achieved. These projects include in particular the UPM’s flagship carbon project, the Sichuan Rural Poor Household Biogas PoA, one of the largest Programme of Activities in the world registered under CDM and GS4GG, and managed in cooperation with its partner Chengdu Oasis Co. Ltd. and the Sichuan Rural Energy Office(SREO). The PoA has already 400,000 households involved and has offset to date almost 7 million tCO2e.
In addition to general professional services related to all-things biogas/bio-energy, UPM started in 2015 to increase significantly its consulting services and technical assistance offering for humanitarian and development cooperation in the field of Waste-to-Value, Integrated Waste Management and Sustainable sanitation/FSM. The company created strong partnerships with institutions and individual experts renowned in the field to provide tailor-made services to its clients and bringing together global and local knowledge and know-how.
In my previous work with the United Nations, I think myself could have contributed more to much greater project success. It would have been within the scope of my authority and possibilities. That's why it's important to resist every day so that the opportunity provided to achieve the big goal becomes a little bigger. With the UPM team, we always fought for this additional space offering higher, bigger and greater project success.” said Martin Ohlsen, one of UPM consultants and International expert in logistics, transport and food distribution, with 25 years of leading humanitarian efforts for the UN
We are very proud that after 30 years, we can carry on the mission set by our founder: supporting the environment and the most vulnerable people of our planet. I would like to take this opportunity to thanks our staff, present and past, and our cooperation partners, for their commitment over the years. There are still a lot of challenges ahead but we are looking forward to continuing bringing our expertise where it is needed and cooperate with our partners and clients to build for a better future. “said Martin Dilger, Managing Director of UPM.
